August 2008 Vol. 33 No. 8

Every time you hear JANE SAUNDERS sing there’s a moment of being taken aback again by the soaring, sweet vocals and her captivating style. Jane has never made a secret of her deep spiritual faith, and for years she’s wanted to release an album of Christian music. She describes this album as “a gift to Australian Christians”, but really it’s a gift to all music lovers, because these exquisitely crafted and performed songs transcend their subject matter to inspire and delight at a much more fundamental level. Every track is pure magic. Jane sings the songs with passion and vulnerability. Highlights include the gentle Little Lamb and the beautiful title track In His Hands (both written by COLIN BUCHANAN). Jane’s version of the JULIE MILLER – penned All My Tears, and the song she and Colin wrote about her grandmother, By The Hand (tears are guaranteed here). A sheer joy to listen to – whether you are listening as a believer or simply as a lover of amazing music.

COUNTRY UPDATE
Issue No. 50

When I listen to this amazing recording I can’t help but be astonished that Jane Saunders, with her deep Christian faith and angelic voice has never recorded an album of inspirational songs before. This collection of lovely songs contains some traditional gospel numbers including the potent ‘Immortal Invisible’, the gentle ‘He Leadeth Me’, the timeless ‘Rest Of The Weary’ and the uplifting ‘How Can I Keep From Singing’. There are also some newer gospel songs and Colin Buchanan has penned four extraordinary ones, ‘In His Hands’, ‘Little Lamb’, ‘By The Hand’ and ‘The Other Side’. Jane has also included Julie Miller’s beautiful ‘All My Tears’ and Stuart Townend’s stunning ‘How Deep The Father’s Love’ amongst the 13 tracks. In His Hands is a co-production between Jane Saunders and Stuie French and includes some of the best session musicians Australia has to offer. This exquisite album will bring hope and comfort to those who already have a strong faith but may even reach out and touch many of the hard-hearted among us.

I mentioned in this post a few weeks ago that I had bought Jane Saunders' latest CD, In His hands at EQUIP. I wanted to write a bit more about because I haven't loved a CD this much in ages. As I've listened to it again and again in the past few weeks, I've found myself reminded of what Jesus' death has achieved for me and of the hope of an eternity with Him.

Her style would probably be classified as folk/country and I love the sweetness, clearness and purity of her voice. I've noticed that when I play it with the kids around they understand all the words and sing along and comment on them, which I think is to her credit. I also love the simplicity and depth of the songs on the album. In one song, she sings about her grandmother dying and the hope of seeing her again in heaven (a tear jerker!). In another, she sings as a woman looking back and reflecting on that moment she first believed in Jesus as a 7 year old (another tear jerker!!). She also sings some beautiful hymns, like 'He Leadeth me' and spirituals like 'Give me Jesus'. Actually, most of the songs have the potential to move you to tears, but they are beautiful, God glorifying tears as you are reminded of what we have in Jesus!
